A Drummer’s Marketing Series – Part 2 Getting Social

Posted by Keith On September - 30 - 2009

Angry Twitter BirdI don’t want to jump into the deep end just yet – let’s start with something that is completely free and easy to use… Twitter!

But, before you go off and start tweeting away we need to pick out a username that you will use across all social media platforms.  This will help brand yourself.  Try and think of a name that is easily remembered, or your real name if you so choose.

How To Get A New Drumset On The Cheap

Posted by Keith On September - 28 - 2009

store-drums-2.500The economy has taken a hit on the “extra spending” of most of us and that can make it even harder for new drummers trying to get into a band.  This can also make hard for those who have the desire to learn to play to afford the equipment needed to learn.

After my 5 years away from playing drums I had no equipment aside from a couple of old broken drumsticks (kept because they had some sort of memory tied to them).  At the time I started to play again the economy wasn’t that bad.  However, I had just bought a new house and was preparing to get married within the next few months.  Buying a new drumset was out of the question – Even if I wanted to buy it, my wife to be would have never let me hear the end of it (and rightfully so).

I was lucky enough that a friend of mine needed a drummer desperately and he had a drumset that I could use.  As of right now, I’m still using this drumset.  Over the past few years I’ve added some of my own bits and pieces to the kit – a new splash cymbal, a new snare drum, a new double bass pedal, and some other random bits an pieces.  However, I’ve come to a point where the entry level drumset that I’m using just isn’t enough.

A Drummer’s Marketing Series – Part 1 Introduction

Posted by Keith On September - 23 - 2009

pic_newsI’ve been a drummer for quite a while.  I’ve also been into marketing (specifically internet marketing) for about a year or so.  In the Drummer’s Marketing Series I want to cover some cheap (and mostly free) ways of marketing yourself or your band to the world.

If you want to be a working musician you have to do more then just be awesome at your instrument , you have to market yourself to the world around you.  You have to get your name out to every person who might possibly be interested in you as a drummer (or sometimes just as a person).

I mean; you could be the best drummer in the world, have skills that match that of Pert, Sexton, and Bonham.  But, none of that matters if no one hears you.

If a drummer hits a rim-shot in the woods and no one is around to hear it – did he really hit a rim-shot?

Phil Collins To Never Play Drums Again!

Posted by Keith On September - 22 - 2009

PhilCollinsAs reported by many, many, many sites – Phil Collins has stated that he will never play drums again due to a painful spine injury.

It comes from years of playing. I can’t even hold the sticks properly without it being painful, I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through.

The article made me think more about how drummers don’t tend to think about their health and how important it really is to their craft.

Are You A Juggernaut Or A Shadowcat?

So I just finished reading a great article entitled “Brute Force Learning” on theparadiddler.com.  The entire article is based on two completely different ways that drummers tend to learn their craft – either by just pushing through without lessons or any feedback, or with finesse by assessing their progress as they go.

If you can’t afford private instruction (you really should start saving for some lessons because everyone can stand to learn something new) – Omar (The Paradiddler) gives a great suggestion…. take away the kit and setup a camera.

Omar talks about how he setup a camera to record him with nothing but a practice pad.

I want to scrutinize every aspect of my playing and how I can better it. I’ll be examining my posture, how I relax, my stick technique – really fundamental stuff. Then, when I’ve done this for a little while, I’ll start putting the kit back together little by little, at each step ensuring that I only progress, and not regress.

Who’s Going To The Biggest Drum Conference In The US?

Posted by Keith On September - 18 - 2009

Pasic09Unfortunately, do to my work schedule I will not be able to attend PASIC this year.  I’m pretty bummed about this, but I did want to find out who is going and give a little bit of info to those who may not know what PASIC or PAS is.

For those that don’t know – PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) is a yearly convention filled with percussionist and percussion vendors from all over the world.  There are workshops, guest speakers, competitions, and a whole lot more that are all focused around the world of percussion.

video_markerI’m getting ready to start taping some video interviews with local Atlanta drummers and some product reviews.  However, I need your help! I really want to keep the video series going once I get started so if there are any local Atlanta area drummers out there that read this blog, get in touch with me and we’ll try to setup an interview.

Posted by Keith On September - 16 - 2009

ScreenShot004One of the best ways to learn to play drums for little cost is to watch instructional DVD’s.  One of the best companies I’ve found for Drumming DVD’s is RailRoad Media.  These guys have a massive collection at a low cost.  Their qualtiy of video and instruction is top notch.

Well, RailRoad Media has gotten to be pretty big and they are moving their office within the next week.  What does this mean for you?

About Me

I started playing percussion (mallets) when I was 8 years old. I then eventually moved into concert band in middle school where I taught myself to play drumset. After middle school I played in the highschool drumline and played in several bands.... I stopped playing drums for about 5 years until I was approached by a friend to start playing again for his band. I have been playing with Blaming Tim in Atlanta for about two years now.
